The City of Palm Bay, in coordination with CareerSource Brevard, has designed a summer youth employment program that teaches high school juniors the necessary soft skills and life skills to obtain and sustain employment. Under specific criteria, interested students apply for consideration. Once selected, the students participate in a one-week long, intensive Foundations Training where they study topics like, but not limited to; networking, building work relationships, diversity in the workplace, financial literacy and other topics critical to their future success. Local employers spend time with the students talking about their various career ladders and expectations upon hiring, which gives the students the opportunity to learn directly from industry leaders. The students then spend a day learning how to interview, with the opportunity to practice in rounds of mock interviews. The Foundations Training ends with the students interviewing in a speed-dating setting with the local employer sponsors for five-week summer internships. Part of what determines the success of this program is the support of local businesses who sponsor these students. In addition to funding, they interview, hire and educate the students on best business practices, operations, finance and many other topics. All liability, workers compensation and hiring paperwork are handled through a third-party, local staffing agency, allowing the front line employer to focus on productively educating the student during their internship.
